Rebecca Chulew: Rumor has it you will be live in Austin, Texas on January 22 and 23 at Stateside at the Paramount.
Colin Hay: I love playing in Austin. I enjoyed performing at One World Theatre and Cactus Café in the past.
RC: You have a new album out named “Next Year People.” Do you have any favorite songs on it?
CH: I really like “Long Way Home,” “Next Year People” and “To There From Here.”
RC: What’s the story behind “To There From Here”?
CH: I wrote it with Michael Georgiades, who co-wrote six of the songs on the new album. The instigation came from him. I might have come up with the middle of the song. How do we get out of the mess we are in? We both remember the 1960’s: The Kennedys, MLK being shot, Mandela in jail, the Cuban missile crisis. Now we are sitting around in what could be the last trimester of humanity. There’s a lot of people I like and would want to save if I could.
RC: How was it touring with Barenaked Ladies and the Violent Femmes this past summer on the Last Summer On Earth tour?
CH: I had a lot of fun with both bands. I opened up the show and played for a half hour. Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie and I had a couple of chats.
RC: What’s next on the agenda after this tour?
CH: When I have a little time off, I might hit the studio to record some new materia
